Even if you are entirely new to the racing world, you will have heard the term turbocharger before. This forced induction device acts as a booster for you, delivering incredible efficiency and speed over a period of time. It works by forcing even more air into your combustion chamber, creating an extremely powerful movement for your vehicle.
One of the main benefits of using this system is that a turbocharger will place any additional pressure on your exhaust. This can help improve efficiency, as it using energy that otherwise would have just been wasted. However, compared to a supercharger, the time between pressing your turbocharger and actually getting the power boost is significantly longer than it is with a supercharger. You do, however, get even more power with a turbocharger than a supercharger.
This is not all a turbocharger can be used for, though. It can also be used to make your fuel efficiency much better, without significantly increasing the power of your vehicle. It merely recovers energy which is being wasted, and feeds it back to the engine itself. By using this wasted energy to increase the air mass inside, it makes it easier for the fuel to be burned.
As mentioned above, though, the “lag” on your turbochargers getting going is a significant issue especially in race circumstances. Because it requires a build-up of pressure in the exhaust, it can take time before it gets there. Driving in a low to medium throttle is usually not enough to get your turbocharger going, either. Only when your engine is driving at a significant speed can the boost be delivered with any real potency.
